Center for Food Safety - Spring 2024

The University of Georgia approved tenure and promotion to associate professor for three Center for Food Safety faculty members this year. Dr. Henk den Bakker, Dr. Laurel Dunn, and Dr. Govindaraj Dev Kumar were among 67 faculty members university-wide to receive tenure. In addition, Dr. Xiangyu Deng was promoted from associate professor to full professor.

The annual meeting introduced new and relevant topics, demonstrating the center’s commitment to staying at the forefront of food safety. This year, presenters delved into AI, the intersection of food safety and sustainability, and pet food outbreaks.

Professor Ynes Ortega significantly contributed to food safety research by hosting the first International Cyclospora Conference in early March. A segment of the annual meeting was also dedicated to discussing this parasite and the role it plays in emerging food safety issues.

Jouman Hassan, a doctoral student under Issmat Kassem, was a finalist in the UGA 3MT® Competition and the first-place winner of the CFS poster contest held during the annual meeting.
