Food Science Club

We would love to report that the club is doing well. We have about 30 members and have taken their interests into consideration in order to plan events to expand their knowledge of what Food Science is and can be in fun and educational ways via meetings, tours, workshops, and more.

Over the last semester:

We partnered with Campus kitchen to cook meals for local Athens families.

We had general body meetings to:

  • Connect stuents with industry professionals like Golden State Foods and Terrapin Brewing Company
  • Showcase the diversity within the department and highlight dishes from across the world during our International Potluck
  •  Demonstrate resources available to students on campus by having representatives from the UGA Mentor Program and Food Science Honors Society present to our members
We hosted one of the largest Department Holiday Dinner Parties to bring together 50 students, faculty, and staff from both campuses and celebrate a successful semester.

UGA Food Science Club was the only Institute of Food Technologists Student Association organization to participate in both IFT Division and regional events, winning the Carbohdyrate Divsion Hackathon and participating in the South Eastern Institute of Food Technologists Regional Gathering at the World of Coke.

Here are our upcoming plans for the semester:

We've worked with the department to design a custom-made, limited edition sweatshirt to raise funds for the club and have received over 75 orders from students, alumni, faculty and staff.

We are planning to visit a Kerry manufacturing facility explore career opportunities in operations (we were invited by Eythan Franklin, a UGA alum).

We will be hosting the Association of Food and Drug Officials in February to highlight careers in regulatory

We will be traveling to Atlanta for the annual South Eastern Institute of Food Technologists Expo to provide students with an opportunity to network and learn about new food products and trends.

We will be traveling to Griffin to visit the campus, the Center for Food Safety, the Food Product Innovation Center, and hear from entrepeneurs about their experiences in starting a business.

We have teams participating in the IFTSA College Bowl, we are going to the regionals at the end of March in Gainesville, FL, and the IFTSA Mars-Wrigley Product Development Competition.
