Center for Food Safety
CFS making news in 2023
The Center for Food Safety is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. To mark the occasion, the center’s annual meeting included a look back at the noteworthy people and research who have made CFS the global leader in food safety that it is today. Held last March and attended by 172 food safety experts, the meeting included presentations from past members such as the founding director of CFS, Mike Doyle. The history and impact of the annual meeting itself were also covered in a news story by CFS Communication Professional, Jennifer Reynolds.
UGA Research published a story highlighting current research within the department. The article gives readers an overview of how antimicrobial blue light could one day make their food safer, the dangers of antimicrobial resistance and how it relates to food, and how bioinformatics are paving the way for a safer food supply.
Finally, CFS Director Francisco Diez lent his food safety expertise to the Reagan-Udall Foundation’s review of the FDA. The team gathered information by reviewing documents and meeting with officials, stakeholders and interested groups who offered insight into the FDA. They evaluated the collected data and drafted a report including their findings and the recommendations of the many parties they interviewed. The report was published in December 2022 and is available to the public online.
