Food Science Club

Spring 2023 Semester Accomplishments and Activities:

January

We were hosted by UGA alum Eythan Franklin at the Kerry manufacturing facility in Commerce, GA to learn about chicken broth processing and the career paths available at Kerry. We worked with the department to design a custom-made, limited-edition sweatshirt to raise funds for the club and have sold almost 100 of them.

February

We had Jessia Badour from the Association of Food and Drug Officials come and talk about careers in regulatory and food safety. We also traveled to Atlanta for the annual SEIFT Expo to volunteer and learn about new food products and trends.

March

We visited the Griffin campus to hear from our graduate students about their research and tour the Center for Food Safety and Food Product Innovation Center. We also had a panel of local entrepreneurs discuss their experience in creating their businesses in the food industry. We hosted 5 UGA alumni serving as mentors in the UGA Mentor Program to discuss their careers and provide their advice and support.

April

The club’s College Bowl team traveled to Gainesville, Florida to participate in the annual Southeastern College Bowl competition. A panel of 9 Ingredion R&D employees spoke about their roles at the company and gave their insight on how students can best prepare to successfully apply for and secure internship opportunities.

May

We visited the Terrapin Brewing Co manufacturing facility in Athens to learn about the brewing process and meet UGA alum, Angela Harris. The club’s product development team was accepted into the final round of the IFTSA Mars-Wrigley competition and will be traveling to Chicago in July to present their product at IFT First.
